Old School: Timothy Yang

Timothy Yang–the wonderful man in room 60. The man, the myth, the legend, teaching freshmen biology, AP environmental science, and digital film, he is one heck of an inspiration. Anyone who has been in one of his classes knows how well he teaches and how he keeps everyone engaged and interested. He creates connections with his students, and he is an incredible teacher. Where did you go to high school?

I went to Monte Vista, Cupertino.

What was your school’s mascot?

Matador.

When did you graduate?

1993.

What was your favorite class in high school and why?

I liked science class and ceramics class–the science is my area of interest obviously, and ceramics is my artistic side–thats why I teach digital film!

What was your most challenging class and why?

Trigonometry and French–trigonometry just wasn’t clicking for me right away and French is because it was a new language.

What extracurricular activities were you involved in?

Track and field was the main one I focused on. Outside of school I did violin and oil painting.

What was your favorite extracurricular activity and why?

Track and Field, it’s the team and group work part that I enjoyed–acheiving a common goal. The opportunity to talk and socialize, it’s mostly individual ability, versus something like soccer which is a team ability, yet it still allows for team aspects. 

Who were your favorite bands/artists/songs while in high school?

So many…Metallica–been around forever! Arrowsmith, Talking Heads, and Duran Duran.

What was your favorite TV show in high school?

Magnum P.I, MacGyver, and A-team.

What was your favorite novel?

Terry Brooks The Sword of Shannara–I read the entire series.

What was your favorite movie while in high school?

Fight club, Goodfellas, there were a lot of movies… let’s just say.

What are your favorite memories of high school?

Friendships, games like basketball–just going around to play, and learning to drive.

What is your least favorite memory of high school?

Don’t really have any…nothing negative. It was a season of good and bad, just kind of rolled with it…nothing that I regret doing.

What time did school start and end?

7:30 ish or 8:00am to 3:00pm.

What was your GPA?

3.2-3.5 somewhere around there.

Did you receive any awards?

I did, ROP award.

How did you get to school (if you drove, what kind of car)?

I walked to school.

Did you ever have to go to the dean’s or principal’s office? Why?

No I didn’t–nothing for disciplinary reasons, I was a pretty good student.
