Justice for Alex Pretti

By Haley Kim

On January 26, 2026, federal immigration agents fatally shot Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old ICU nurse, during an escalating immigration enforcement operation in the city. During this confrontation with the agents, Alex was reported to have taken multiple shots to the body. This devastating event has motivated civilians to question political authority and the accountability of federal law enforcement.

The incident occurred amidst a crackdown in Minneapolis, where ICE and Border Patrol agents had been deployed. While local officials claim Pretti was “brandishing” a gun, multiple bystander accounts and recordings claim the young nurse simply held a phone in his hand while attempting to assist a woman who had been shoved to the ground by federal officers. Alex was then immediately sprayed down with pepper spray, with videos reviewed by news organizations showing him restrained to the ground. Within seconds of struggle, ten shots were fired directly at Alex, causing fatal blows to his body.

With immediate political backlash in the catastrophic aftermath, Donald Trump responded to The Wall Street Journal, claiming, “I don’t like any shooting. I don’t like it.” He added: “But I don’t like it when somebody goes into a protest and he’s got a very powerful, fully loaded gun with two magazines loaded up with bullets also. That doesn’t play good either.” Eyewitnesses, Pretti’s family, and local officials challenge this report, saying the president’s portrayal contradicts video evidence and that Alex wielded no weapon as the officers deliberately shot him.

Ultimately, the killing of Alex Pretti poses grave concerns as to the lethal forces of ICE and border patrol enforcement, along with the accountability of the officials behind them. A transparent, independent investigation is essential not only to determine responsibility for the case but also to ensure that federal officials operate within the bounds of the law. Without responsibility and action, these violent incidents become normalized, threatening the civil rights and justice they are meant to protect.
