Hello and welcome to this issue’s warrior wardrobe, today I’m with Westmont senior Jaden Gil. Aside from guitar playing, you can find Jaden serving as the secretary of the Korean American Student Association club here at Westmont. But apart from his music playing and his leadership on campus, his fashion is just another way Jaden Gil expresses his personality, through his vintage and laid-back aesthetic that looks effortless and intentional. Let’s talk with him and get some insight on his fashion sense.
Describe your style in 3 words
“I guess— Trendy, Casual, and— Eclectic.”
What inspires your fashion?
“Social media and kind of going out in public and seeing what people wear, that has sort of shaped my fashion sense.”
What is your favorite item in your closet?
“My favorite item in my closet has to be my Yuremane jeans.”[See photos below]
Why?
“They’re unique and simple, and very versatile, they go with pretty much everything.”
Where do you buy your clothes?
“I mostly shop online, like clothes from small businesses or smaller brands.”
How do you find these small businesses?
“Through ‘connections’, through other people, and on social media.”
If you had to choose one fashion trend you love and one you hate, what would they be?
“A fashion trend that I hate would probably be extremely baggy jeans. A fashion trend that I love— I don’t think there’s actually one fashion trend that I love, I can’t decide.”
Didn’t you used to wear extremely baggy jeans?
“Listen, I’m a changed man. I’m more into straight fit now.”
When you first got into fashion did you dress more for style, comfort, self-expression, or for trends?
“When I first got into fashion I guess following more for comfort, now I like to combine comfort with self-expression.”
What is your favorite accessory?
“Probably my earrings, not everyone has their ears pierced but I think if you do it’s a good accessory to have to make your face stand out.” [See image below]
What are some fashion tips you have for other people who may be looking to elevate their style?
“Don’t think about what others will think about you and wear what you want to wear, because as long as you’re confident that’s all that matters in the end.”
What is an underrated clothing brand you think more people should know about?
“I guess I have a few, K-two Studios and Our legacy are some— there’s a lot more but I can’t name most of them off the top of my head, but I think those two are really good businesses.”
What does fashion mean to you?
“Fashion to me means confidence. What I mean is that to be able to go out and wear what you want without the fear of being judged, you need confidence, and fashion is one hell of a good way to show it.”
A few months ago over Thanksgiving break I bought you a jacket at the mall for $150, you paid me back some of the money— but I guess what I’m asking is— where’s my other 17 dollars?
“Listen… I spent it on food.”
So I’m assuming I’m never getting that money back?
No, not at all.
