It’s simple: find a comfortable chair and prepare to expand your musical knowledge. Today, we explore the brilliant elements that frame the Palm Desert Scene’s grainy sound.
As the dust settled in the barren California desert, residents across the Palm Desert region felt the ground rumble beneath them from the booming generator-powered rock shows Kyuss would put on. Similar to the heavy riffs of iconic hard rock pioneers like Black Sabbath, with traces of the contemporary mainstream songs of the Seattle Grunge scene in the early 1990’s and late 1980’s, Southern-Californian rock bands bloomed as they adopted the new musical culture of the desert. Kyuss kickstarted the heavy, garage-rock sound that defined the gritty, psychedelic Palm Desert scene. The stoner-rock band’s influence spans decades, with fading traces of their impact resonating. Original members included legendary guitarist Josh Homme, vocalist John Garcia, drummer Brant Bjork, and bassist Scott Reeder. Kyuss distinguished themselves from other bands after Homme famously began playing his guitar through a bass amplifier; this allowed for the band’s heavier, grunge sound.
Despite their potential, the band eventually broke up in the summer of 1995, failing to reach the mainstream success of their subsequent counterparts.
Following the unfortunate breakup, each band member branched off to spread the individual aspects of Kyuss’ craft. Below are some of the bands that sprouted from the ashes of Kyuss’ remains:
- Fu Manchu
- Brant Bjork & The Bros
- Queens of the Stone Age
- Hermano
- Unida
