Ranking Ways to Propose

By Madeline Tanaka

Whenever Valentine’s Day comes around, my TikTok and Instagram feeds are bombarded with a variety of ways people have been proposed to. With the holiday quickly approaching, I’ve brought it upon myself to rank these proposals (photos included!). Under the Northern Lights or inside of a fast-food chain cheeseburger, I’m always impressed with people’s creativity when offering their lifelong commitment to another.

  1. In a Flower Field Next to a Scenic Lake (10/10)

When I saw this show up on my For You Page, my jaw completely dropped. First of all, I’d like to point out the fact that there is not a single person in sight. I despise the presence of others during proposals (sorry, but not really). Additionally, the location was so beautiful that it looked like a green screen, and it looked like Flynn Rider proposing to Rapunzel. Wow, just wow.

  1. Literally Anywhere In Public (2/10)

This is actually one of the more popular options that I’ve seen, and I swear the man only proposes in public for one of two reasons: (1) both of the partners in the relationship love the attention, and they’ve both agreed it’s OK, or (2) the one proposing knows the other will reject the proposal, so they use public pressure to make their significant other say yes. And it’s usually the latter.

  1. In a Second Grade Classroom, but the Woman Getting Proposed To Is The Teacher (8/10)

When I first watched the video, I thought it was a little weird, but as it continued playing, you can really tell that the teacher had a connection with the students and that teaching really meant a lot to her. With that in consideration, and the sway of the excitement of the children, this idea is a lot cuter than it first seemed. Although something more private might be preferred, the sentiment behind the proposal was adorable.

  1. On a News Station But the Woman Getting Proposed to Is the News Anchor (6/10)

I’m kind of on the fence about this one because it’s like the last one, where the person getting proposed to is doing something they love when it happens. Additionally, the woman’s teleprompter was written about the proposal about to occur (it said something along the lines of, “Big surprise today when one news channel reporter saw her longtime boyfriend showed up to propose to her.”). The only thing I have against this one is the fact that it was broadcast on live TV, which would honestly make me embarrassed…

  1. At a Concert (3/10)

I’m really iffy on this one because it 100% depends on the moment. While I’ve seen multiple videos of people proposing at Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour during her hit song “Love Story,” I’ve seen others that are completely out of pocket, such as one that happened in a dense crowd at Lollapalooza. This sort of goes with the whole proposal in public, but, obviously, sometimes there’s true sentimental value behind choosing to do this that I can get behind.
