In late 2025, a political (and musical) controversy erupted after the White House used trending songs in its recent social media posts about immigration enforcement. Videos featuring ICE operations were paired with upbeat tracks from major artists—a combination that quickly drew criticism and raised questions about how music is being used in political messaging.

Pop star Sabrina Carpenter responded the most forcefully after her song Juno was used in one video. She publicly called the post “evil and disgusting” and demanded that the administration stop using her music to promote policies she strongly opposes. Similarly, Olivia Rodrigo condemned the use of her song all-american b*tch, calling the video “racist, hateful propaganda” and distancing herself from the political message entirely. Furthermore, after President Trump’s election win in 2024, he posted a video on TikTok featuring Rodrigo’s hit song “deja vu,” which she quickly responded to and removed the song from the application.

Amid this wave of criticism, one particular artist’s silence stood out: Taylor Swift. Swift’s music has also appeared in White House posts—most notably when a video used her song The Fate of Ophelia in a political context that some found ironic given her past criticisms of the current administration. Yet unlike Carpenter and Rodrigo, Swift has not publicly addressed the situation or explicitly criticized the use of her music in this context. Her refusal to comment has sparked discussion online, with many fans and commentators questioning why she has stayed quiet while others have spoken out.

Some people argue that Swift may be choosing silence as a strategic decision. Publicly engaging in political debates can be risky for an artist with a massive global fan base, and many celebrities weigh the potential consequences before speaking out. But this idea is ironically contradicted in the artist’s 2020 documentary titled Miss Americana, where she openly spoke out against Trump’s administration and the state of the country’s federal and state governments. Others suggest that the lack of a response may stem from a desire to avoid being drawn into political controversy. Whatever the reason, Swift’s silence has become part of a bigger conversation.

In today’s world, music isn’t just background noise. It carries meaning and cultural significance. How songs are used—especially in politically charged contexts—can shape public opinion in numerous ways. The reactions from Carpenter and Rodrigo demonstrate that many artists are ready to defend their work and their values, even when it means challenging authority. In other cases, the silence of those like Swift remind us that not every artist responds in the same way, and that silence itself can be interpreted in many different ways.

This debate displays how closely art and politics are intertwined, particularly in an age built on social media. As musicians navigate the use of their work on public platforms, their reactions shape public judgment about creative control, political values, and the power of pop culture figures. It is also a reminder that music carries meaning far beyond the beat.
