The way the bones turned out.

Shading the hands.

Chalk pastels and graphite (on cardboard)
What is the meaning behind your artwork?
Tight lacing is bad for you.
What was the inspiration behind this piece?
Diagrams of the effects of tight lacing on the body.
What do you hope viewers will take away from this artwork?
There were some historical trends that were very bad for people’s health.
What was the process like in creating this piece?
Long and dirty- there was a charcoal sketch, then I did all the skin, skirt and ribbon with charcoal, then I used chalk pastels to do the organs and rib cage while also figuring out how to make the organs look shiny and smooth (or bumpy for the pancreas). Both the dust of the charcoal and the chalk pastels got everywhere.
Who is your favorite artist and why?
Vincent Van Gogh. He had a very interesting style and a great understanding of all of the different elements of art. Some of my favorites are his “Almond Blossoms”, “Head of a Skeleton with a Burning Cigarette”, and “Starry Night”.
