R.I.P Kimber Mills

By Sadie York

Kimber Mills, an 18-year old senior in high school, was fatally shot on October 19 in Pinson, Alabama. While at a bonfire, at a local spot called “The Pit,” several students feared for their lives as 27-year-old suspect Steven Tyler Whitehead opened fire. At around 12:24 a.m., it was reported that Steven showed up to the bonfire and was involved in a verbal altercation. When this fight escalated physically, Kimber attempted to help break it up, but ended up losing her own life. According to a witness, the suspect attempted to speak to Kimber before the fight broke out, and amidst the chaos, she was tragically caught in the crossfire. Mills was struck in the leg and head, and despite her rapid arrival to the nearest hospital, doctors deemed her injuries too severe to be recovered.

With plans to attend the University of Alabama and study nursing, Mills was a beloved daughter, sister, student, and friend, loved deeply by her community. This love was exemplified during Mills’ honor walk, in which over 100 friends and family lined the hospital corridors as her body was transferred for organ donation. Kimber’s heart was donated to a 7-year-old, an act which carries on her kindness, even in death.

Injuries were sustained by three other victims of this incident, but no other deaths were reported. Silas McCay, one of the injured, was shot 10 times while shielding friends, including Mills. However, McCay wasn’t shot in any critical areas, and luckily survived. Whitehead was initially charged with three counts of attempted murder, but upon Mills’ death, was charged with murder.

Kimber Mills will be held in remembrance for her bright spirit and radiant energy, always in remembrance as her community continues to mourn their dreadful loss. She was involved in her school’s track and field team, as well as her cheerleading team. Kimber’s death touches the hearts of many, gaining nation-wide recognition as her story reaches media attention. Kimber’s passing is one of many inflicted by unregulated gun use, a rising danger among all communities today. Mills’ murder sheds light on this dangerous societal issue, and while legal action is being taken against Whitehead, gun-use in general needs to be heavily re-evaluated to prevent further tragedies from occurring.
