Quan Millz

By Laura Lipcsei

This H** Got Roaches In Her Crib, My Psycho Baby Daddy, Pregnant By My Gay Stepdaddy—all these are, no joke, actual titles of books by Quan Millz.

Despite the ridiculous titles, Millz’s books have been praised for exploring the realities within black communities (though I can’t attest to this as I personally have not read any because, to be completely honest, I’m too scared to do so). He has also been complimented for his exaggerated and unconventional tone which compliments his out of pocket stories and makes him stand out from many other modern authors.

On the other hand, many also criticize Millz, claiming that he is exploiting the “black experience” whilst also reinforcing negative stereotypes about women (since, if you couldn’t already tell from the titles, many of his books depict innocent men facing selfish women).

Either way, no matter how offensive or problematic his work is, no one can deny the uniqueness and creativity of Millz’s novels. As for me—I still can’t form a true opinion on him.
