Functional Fashion 101: Uniqlo

By Rosie Lu

As we approach the winter season of 2025, functional fashion takes over wardrobes, bringing simple yet innovative brands into focus. From the quintessential white tee to crisp tailored blazers, Japanese utilitarian brand Uniqlo’s catalog appeals to a vast market of all ages.

The recent expansion of Westfield Valley Fair’s very own branch aligns with Uniqlo’s recent popularity within the Gen Z community. Hundreds of eager customers line up outside the newly renovated, balloon-covered store on the day of its grand opening, where they receive a bottle of tea and a logo-engraved cake upon entry. Uniqlo offered a limited, store-exclusive discount on its signature items to celebrate.

Below is an overview of Uniqlo’s most popular items, some of which I have in my closet and others I hope to obtain someday:

AIRism: The AIRism cotton oversized t-shirt garnered viral attention on social media for its sleek, boxy fit and breathable material.

HEATTECH: This line’s t-shirts, available in various necklines and degrees of warmth, are a popular choice for layering on especially chilly days.

UT: Crewneck tees printed with graphics from anime, signature characters, and other parts of worldwide pop culture are released frequently. Best-selling prints include Dragon Ball, Miffy, and Mofusand.

Uniqlo :C: This is a line of refined essentials released under the creative direction of Clare Wright Keller, a past director of notable luxury brands like Givenchy. Its most popular is the wide sweatpant and oversized hoodie set.

PUFFTECH: At a slightly higher price point, jackets and vests from this collection provide high-performance insulation. The parka offers a blend of functionality and aesthetics with a chic funnel neck and cocoon silhouette.

Pants: Though not exactly a collection, the Baggy Curve Jeans and Jersey Barrel Pants have likewise earned the praises of shoppers worldwide.

On a more global scale, the recent Uniqlo x Needles collaboration blends sleek aesthetics with Needles’ retro luxury style. The new collection features jackets, cardigans, and track pants, all bearing the iconic butterfly logo of Needles. All pieces are constructed in neutral-toned fleece fabric, making them both easy-to-style and comfortable—though the 100% polyester composition has received some backlash from online users hoping for luxury quality given the standard for Needles clothing.

Overall, Uniqlo has fundamentally shifted consumers’ views on basics, proving that affordable doesn’t have to mean disposable, and simple doesn’t have to mean boring. From closet staples to wish-list items, the brand has mastered creating pieces that work for everyone, whether you’re a high schooler reaching for comfortable lounge wear or a professional layering timeless basics to impress at work. For a generation that values both style and substance, Uniqlo is the destination to shop.
