Flip…Flop

By Mason Vargas

“Flip…Flop” is exactly how I’d describe the San Francisco 2025 season campaign. The season was what many, myself included, would describe as a flop. The franchise finished their season with a win-loss record of 81-81, their fourth consecutive year ending with 79 to 81 wins. On the flipside, the season brought glimmers of hope to the supporters’ eyes. The team showed flashes of success with multiple winning streaks of four to seven wins. The Giants’ polarization between the beginning and middle of the season left fans with a multitude of feelings—to name a few, despair, bewilderment (over where their team had gone), and hopelessness. After a dull period in the franchise where few players were added to the clubhouse and many had left, big moves were made in the signings of Willy Adames, a former Milwaukee Brewers’ shortstop and probable future Hall of Fame addition, and Justin Verlander. The team built a record of 32-26, paving the way for a strong season, from March to May; however, the team has notoriously performed below their accumulated expectations and continued the trend, racking up a record of 22-29 from June to July. Rafael Devers, a three-time All-Star and two-time silver slugger winner, was signed from the Boston Red Sox in a blockbuster trade in June. Devers didn’t achieve the same levels of production he’s proven to be capable of, his batting average dropped from .272 to .236, in addition, his on-base percentage dropped from .401 to .347, each respective stat following the deal. In the closing of the season, the Giants fought hard to fight back, with sights to claim a wild card spot in the National League—at times being within one game away—but failed in the end with a record of 27-26 in August and September, finishing two games away from the Cincinnati Reds at 83-79. Personally, I remain optimistic for the seasons to come from San Francisco’s beloved orange and black baseball team, the Giants.
