My introduction to Benson Boone was not an organic occurrence on spotify, or even coming across his backflips on instagram. Rather, I saw Benson Boone for the first time at 9 am, Journalism class, 2023, on 100 calendars sent to the class.
Shortly after receiving his very obvious promo–sending calendars and bookmarks to high school Journalism classes nearby–Westmont’s journalist quickly got to work, vandalizing said calendars and posting them up around campus. Donned with (even more) extreme mustaches, eyeliner, unreal piercing blue eyes, and new eyebrow, nose, lip piercings, Benson Boone haunted the halls of Westmont for weeks. For those who did not get to experience the calendars as I did, fear not, for my sister saved a few, hiding them in my room for me to discover after a few weeks and I still have them (and photos).
When I heard Benson Boone was coming to Chase Center–a mere hour away–I of course decided I simply had to go; seeking a full circle moment from the moment I first heard of the musician.
One of my soccer teammates was my company for this concert. She is an original Benson Boone fan, knowing his old songs and a hater of his new ones, while I admittedly, only knew a few lyrics here and there and of course, the infamous “Mystical Magical”.
I went into the concert with low expectations, after all, it is Benson Boone (moonbeam ice cream anyone?), and I was pleasantly surprised by his stage presence and the sheer joy of everyone in the arena. Not only were we constantly surrounded by sequins, the shiniest bell bottoms you could imagine, and lit up hats, the smiles and giggles all around us created an infectious environment. Benson Boone’s enthusiasm–and his crazy impressive backflips–pushes the crowd’s screaming, cheering, and dancing to another level. While Benson Boone does have his, ahem, quirks and interesting songs, his vocal range is seriously impressive. His songs just don’t give his voice enough justice.
All in all, Benson Boone’s concert was a really fun experience. Would I do it again? Probably not, do I regret it? Absolutely not.
