Mitch Albom

By Averi Halbert

I want to preface this article by saying I typically do not like authors, rather I find a single piece of work amazing, and find the others lacking. However, as I have begun to pick up reading (despite my lack of spare time) I have found myself reaching for Mitch Albom’s works.

His novels are on the shorter end, which are perfect to read before going to bed or for those who are trying to procrastinate (ahem). Do not, however, let the length fool you. Albom’s books address topics most authors dance around, drawing your attention and keeping it, while also perhaps making you cry (sob). Below are three of my favorites, each one has changed my perspective in little ways, and I wish I could read them for the first time again.

#1 – tuesdays with Morrie

  • 5/5
  • Might be the saddest book I have ever read
  • I only made it four pages before I cried, so be warned.
  • Talks about death in a really fascinating way
  • omgomgomgomgomg
  • IS A MEMOIR
  • “Once you learn how to die, you learn how to live.”

#2 – the stranger in the lifeboat

  • 3.6/5
  • Ok plot twist
  • PAUSE-HELLO????
  • Speaks on religion
  • Did not cry for this one (I think)
  • “The words ‘We’re going to die’ have been uttered too many times. If that is to be, if this is indeed my end, then I am writing to you in the pages of this notebook, Annabelle, in hopes you might somehow read them after I am gone. I need to tell you something, and I need to tell the world as well.”

#3 – the time keeper

  • 4.3/5
  • About time!
  • Literally, is about time
  • Really cool portrayal of how people impact one another
  • Could not put down
  • Cause and effect
  • Happy ending?
  • “With endless time, nothing is special. With no loss or sacrifice, we can’t appreciate what we have”
