  • 1630 – The city of Boston, Massachusetts, is founded.
  • 1787 – Members of the Constitutional Convention signed the final draft of the Constitution.
  • 1849 – Harriet Tubman and her two brothers escape from slavery in Maryland. 
  • 1926 – Frida Kahlo was severely injured in a bus accident. She began painting, abandoning her plans for a career in medicine.
  • 1947 – Jackie Robinson was named Rookie of the Year by The Sporting News.
  • 1954 – The novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding was published. 
  • 1976 – NASA unveils its first space shuttle, the Enterprise.
  • 2013Brooklyn Nine-Nine, a police procedural comedy created by Michael Schur and Dan Goor, premiered on NBC.
