Rating Meredith Grey’s Love Interests

By Maya Bourne and Delaney Pound

Today, Delaney and I will be rating Meredith Grey’s love interests throughout Grey’s Anatomy. We will be trying to rate these characters on their own qualities, not the quality of their relationship with Meredith. That being said, this is your SPOILER WARNING, and enjoy our ratings of Meredith Grey’s love interests!

Name: Derek Shepherd

Relationship: Husband

Rating: 5.5/10

Though Meredith and Derek are the basis of the entire show, especially during the earlier seasons; it is important, especially in hindsight, to recognize how toxic their relationship really was. The first aspect and the one most often glossed over is that Derek is an attending, and Meredith is an intern! The sheer power dynamic should have been enough for Derek to have the integrity to end the relationship. Instead, he continues leading Meredith on and torturing her for trying. In addition, Season 11 Derek is truly the worst person I have ever met. In the few years before he dies, Derek becomes extremely narcissistic and manipulative towards Meredith. He turns down a job at the white house “for Meredith”, who never asked him to, and constantly blames her for not being eternally grateful to him. He is beautiful though!

Name: Nathan Riggs

Relationship: Boyfriend kinda

Rating: 7/10

He is pretty ok. He did go back to his ex immediately after being with Meredith, and they didn’t even end up together. Nathan was trauma packed and kind of douchey for a while, but he got better as the seasons went on. If he went through all of his trauma and actually took time to let the new things that were going on in his life sink in, it would’ve been easier to give him a better score. He is not terrible or anything, just a bit questionable.

Name: Cormac Hayes

Relationship: It’s complicated

Rating: bruh/10

UGH! They were really cute together, but he ended up leaving the show just when they could’ve been together. He has a bit of trauma, but unlike all of her other relationships, he seemed to have actually dealt with it in a healthy way. He was very loyal and loved his son a lot, but he kind of let him get in the way of finding love again after his wife died. He was protective, and they were kind of a weird match, but opposites attract, right? Anyways, if you could even call what they had a relationship, it was not terrible, but they could have fought harder for each other. It’s not super devastating that they never became fully official, but we would’ve liked to see them as a couple.

Name: Andrew Deluca

Relationship: Boyfriend

Rating: 5/10

Ok, so he’s not that terrible, but once he started acting psychotic and aggressive, he became horrible. Before he met Meredith and started a relationship with her, he was a really great character. He is just very complex and hard to understand, but if he wanted the help he needed, he would’ve been much, much better.

Name: Finn Dandridge

Relationship: Almost the love of her life

Rating: perfect/10

MEREDITH GREY DID NOT DESERVE THIS MAN. He was literally perfect for her and gave her everything she needed, and she STILL chose Derek five minutes after he called her a bad word. If they were together, her life would’ve been amazing instead of the train wreck that it so clearly is. Shonda Rhimes did him so dirty by cutting his character immediately after Meredith chose (wrongly, might I add) to go back to Derek. OMG. He was perfect.

Name: Nick Marsh

Relationship: Boyfriend

Rating: 7.5/10

Even though he’s a little bit odd, his heart is in the right place. He is a doctor, just like Meredith, so he understands her in ways that are difficult for normal people. He gives off very similar vibes as her, and could be really great if he was a little more confident and had a bigger personality. Overall, he’s pretty ok.
