On May 8, 2025, history was made in Vatican City as Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost of Chicago was elected the 267th pope of the Roman Catholic Church, taking the name Pope Leo XIV. His election marks the first time an American has ascended to the papacy, a milestone that reflects the Church’s evolving global presence.
Pope Leo XIV brings a rich background to his new role. As an Augustinian missionary, he spent approximately 40 years ministering in Peru and later served as the prefect of the Vatican;s Dicastery for Bishops. Known for his commitment to social justice, he has been a vocal advocate for the marginalized, echoing the priorities of his predecessor, Pope Francis (USCCB).
The process of selecting a new pope is steeped in tradition. Following the unfortunate passing of Pope Franics on April 21, 2025, 133 cardinal electors convened in the Sistine Chapel for the conclave. After four ballots over two days, a two-thirds majority elected Prevost as the new pope. Most people were shocked that it only took the cardinals about two days to elect Pope Leo XIV because it can commonly take up to at least a week. In modern times, the average time span for electing a new pope has significantly decreased, as now it most likely takes up to 5 days. The longest amount of time it ever took to elect a new pope was 51 days. The announcement was made with the traditional white smoke rising from the chapel’s chimney signaling to the world that a new pontiff had been chosen.
Pope Leo XIV’s inaugural Mass drew an estimated 200,000 attendees, including global leaders and religious delegations (Axios). In his homily, he emphasized themes of love, unity, and peace, particularly highlighting the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, His early actions suggest a continuation of the Cburt;s focus on humanitarian concerns and interfaith dialogue. Beyond his ecclesiastical duties, Pope Leo XiV is noted for his approachable demeanor and modern sensibilities. He reportedly renjoys word games like Wordle and has a fondness for shows like “Conclave.”
As the Catholic Church embarks on this new chapter under Pope Leo XIV’s leadership, many faithful around the world look forward to a papacy that honors tradition while embracing the challenges and opportunities of the modern era.
