It’s 2019, and I sit in a hotel lobby waiting for my aunt and her friend to finish breakfast. As I idly watch the sunlight filter in through the windows, my aunt’s friend offers me some tea. As a little 11-year-old, I had never drunk tea before, and my mom’s threats of stunted growth echoed in my head. “Sure, I’ll have some!” I reply—little did I know, my life would be changed forever.
Earl Grey was the first tea that I truly enjoyed; all the others before were overshadowed by my unfortunately juvenile tastebuds. Earl Grey has a richer, malty taste, perfect for cold days. After having Earl Grey, I expanded my horizons to breakfast teas with milk and sugar. Since then, I have grown out of requiring heaps of sugar to enjoy the drink. Certain types, like green tea or chrysanthemum tea, are more refreshing without the added sweetener. If you ever see me at dimsum, it’s best not to question how many cups of tea I’ve had. I truly owe it all to Earl Grey!
