Released August 17, 2007, Superbad is widely known as one of the best comedy movies of our generation. Written by legends Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, the movie made waves upon release and continues to fill households with laughter to this day. As follows, there are three reasons why the movie will go down in history.
- Smart and Crude Humor
Superbad, due to its nature as a comedy, is packed with jokes and absurd situations that are bound to make anyone laugh. Although it is rated R, the jokes are not all inappropriate. There is an appealing balance. For example, a scene of Fogell attempting to buy liquor with a license that reads “McLovin” remains a fan favorite. Also, behind all the banter, the writers incorporate a sense of heart, ultimately producing a storyline that captures the essence of male friendship and vulnerability.
- Authentic and Relatable Characters
The characters, especially Seth and Evan, feel like real high school seniors. They are awkward, emotional, and eager to fit in. The characters defy the usual jock or cheerleader senior that Hollywood loves to use. Many relate to their discomfort in growing up and possibly being apart past high school.
- Iconic Writing and Acting
The script is flawless. It is hilarious, memorable, and quotable, leaving viewers with a lasting laugh. Superbad also served as the platform for major breakout performances by Jonah Hill (as Seth), Michael Cera (as Evan), and Christopher Mintz-Plasse (as Fogell). Their acting turned them into comedy stars and added unforgettable personalities to the film.
