On March 11, the White House undertook a shocking transformation—a transformation nobody, except perhaps Elon Musk, could have expected. Wave goodbye to the boring, politically significant building and say hello to a new and glamorous Tesla dealership! That’s right, in an interesting turn of events, Trump decided to renovate the lawn of the White House into a Tesla showcase. Trump claimed that he was reviewing Tesla vehicles for personal use due to hearing good reviews about Tesla—a strange decision since during his last campaign Trump frequently criticized electric vehicles. Moreover, historically, presidents and political figures have been prohibited from explicitly endorsing companies due to ethical concerns. In fact, in 2017, when Kellyanne Conway—Trump’s then-counselor—promoted Ivanka Trump’s clothing line, the government ethics office issued a warning to her to never do so again. Strangely enough, Trump seems to not have received the same warning, and when asked the White House did not issue any statement about the ethical concerns. Although the government is required to represent the people for the well-being of the people, Trump seems to represent the billionaires for the well-being (wealth) of the billionaires; this blatant show of corruption in the government has left many American citizens reeling. Fortunately, the Tesla showcase only lasted one day, and did not remain a permanent fixture in the White House. However, the act of promoting Tesla in an official political building conjures doubt on whether or not Trump truly serves the people, or his own economical desires.
