Shattering Shakes in San Diego

By Sophia Doan

On April 14, 2025, a magnitude 5.2 earthquake struck San Diego. Shaking effects were reported to be felt in San Diego, Los Angeles, and across Orange County. Surprisingly, not much damage was reported. The depth of the earthquake was about 8 miles. The earthquake was likely connected to the Elsinore Fault—a branch off of the San Andreas fault that runs through California. The National Weather Service assured that there was no tsunami predicted.

On the day before, a magnitude 3.3 earthquake also struck the area, likely a foreshock to the larger one. According to CBS, 7 aftershocks were reported after the larger earthquake.

The earthquake struck San Diego at 10:08, and the epicenter was located in Julian, California. Although not predicted long before, alerts were sent out to “drop, cover, hold on. Protect yourself” moments before the disaster struck (bbc.com).

According to several sources interviewed, frightening jolts were felt all around Southern California, but no reports of major damage or harm were reported. Minor window breakage and cracking of architectural structures occurred across the San Diego area, and minor rockslides occurred across the region affected.
