Blame Brett, Thank The Beaches

By Logan Whiteson

If I were to ask you for a country and the music genre you most associate with it, I don’t think many people would say Canada and Rock; however, The Beaches are exactly that. The Toronto-based band was formed in 2013 by sisters Jordan and Kylie Miller, along with Leandra Earl and Eliza Enman-McDaniel. The group evolved from their earlier band, Done with Dolls, into their more mature rock-oriented project. The Beaches’ early works include their 2013 self-titled debut EP as well as Heights (2014); however, their debut album, Late Show (2017), was their breakthrough. Produced by Emily Haines and James Shaw of Metric, the album featured singles like “T-Shirt” and “Money,” later leading to their 2018 Juno award for Breakthrough Group of the Year.
A critical part of the Beaches’ rise to success has been touring, they have opened for major acts such as The Rolling Stones and Foo Fighters. Despite still being a smaller band, their reputation continues to grow. The Beaches’ music creates a vibe of relationships, heartbreak, and empowerment through garage rock grit with pop sensibilities, catchy riffs, and Enman-McDaniel’s punchy drums. While The Beaches have created their own space in modern rock, they are inspired by the eighties and bands like The Strokes and The Aces.
In 2023, they released their 2nd album, Blame My Ex, with the hit single “Blame Brett,” solidifying their presence. The track’s raw lyrics allow fans to connect better with their music, helping the band grow their following. The Beaches are still known as an opening act rather than headlining tours, however, they have a dedicated and growing fanbase. Twelve years after their musical transition, The Beaches have remained true to their style while still being able to grow as artists.
