Play For Jefe

By Madeline Crowley

To live life to the fullest means doing what you love until your very last day. Beloved Westmont football and softball coach Jim “Jefe” Marquez did exactly that.

For most of his life, Coach Jefe dedicated himself to mentoring young athletes and pushing them to reach their full potential. Of his time coaching, he spent a total of 15 years at Westmont, watching more games played by Warriors than his own grandchildren. Those who had the privilege of playing under him were able to experience firsthand his “tough love.” He always demanded the best because he saw the best in his players and he knew exactly how to bring it out. Coaching until the age of 79, his presence was unmistakable:his passion for the game, contagious. He built strong teams, but also strong individuals by giving every player an equal opportunity to showcase their skills. More than a coach, he was like a grandpa and a true asset to Westmont’s community. To honor his legacy, the Westmont softball program held a ceremony before their game against Gunn High School on March 5th. Around 200 people came out to support, including various athletes, family members, and staff members who all recognized the positive impact he made. There was a speech made, followed by a melancholy moment of silence and then the game began. With a special motivation to play for Jefe, Westmont scored a total of 10 runs to Gunn’s 0! It was the perfect way to honor him.

On March 5, 2025, we may have lost this incredible coach, but Jefe’s legacy will forever live on in the players he shaped, the teams he led, and the games he truly loved.
