Saskatchewan: often dismissed as “the province you drive through to get somewhere else.” But what if I told you that you’re missing out on one of Canada’s most serene provinces? Sure, you may not be able to pronounce it properly (suh-ska-chuh-waan), but you won’t need to when you’re in awe of its breathtaking beauty. Thus, I have compiled a list of places to visit and activities to do while on your future trip to Saskatchewan:
- Visit national parks:
Saskatchewan has two extremely picturesque national parks. Prince Albert National Park and Grasslands National Park contrast one another and give a perfect example of the variety of landscapes Saskatchewan has to offer. Prince Albert National Park features a plethora of trees and lakes; Grasslands National Park, rolling hills and bison. Both national parks require you to pay an entry fee (prices vary depending on age) however, the beauty is absolutely worth the price (Prince Albert National Park and Grasslands National Park).
- Spend a day at a lake:
With over 94,000 lakes, there is an abundance of opportunities for discovery and exploration. Out of those 94,000, approximately more than half of them contain fish. Thus, if you love fishing, then Saskatchewan is the place for you. If you aren’t, there are still many other lake activities you can take part in. For example, you could go jet skiing, knee-boarding, tanning, kayaking, paddleboarding, camping, and more. The possibilities are endless.
- Watch a hockey game:
The modern version of ice hockey originated in Canada in Montreal during the mid-19th century and is a true Canadian staple. Canada dominates the sport, as seen in the 2024 4 Nations Face-Off, so finding a good game to watch won’t cause you any trouble. Hockey is an extremely entertaining and exhilarating sport to watch. It is a must to watch a real hockey game in any province of Canada.
- Indulge in local cuisine:
Saskatchewan has many iconic dishes, crops, and snacks but the most special one would be the Saskatoon berry. The Saskatoon berry is native to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and can be incorporated into almost any dish. The most notable dishes with Saskatoon berries are Saskatoon berry pie, Saskatoon berry pierogies, and Saskatoon berry crumble. When raw, they can taste bitter but, when baked, they taste more sweet and nutty. Additionally, Saskatoon berries have twice the amount of antioxidants than a blueberry and are extremely beneficial for your health. Therefore, it is completely worth giving them a try.
- Watch the sunset/sunrise:
Saskatchewan is known as “the land of living skies” and there is a reason why–the sunsets and sunrises are always breathtaking. As a matter of fact, the sky in Saskatchewan is almost always extremely captivating. Even when hailing, the sky in Saskatchewan is always extremely mesmerizing to watch. Thus, if you ever need to just relax and enjoy your day, simply admiring the sky in Saskatchewan is the perfect activity for you. To add on, at night, you can sometimes witness northern lights (aurora borealis), if you are lucky.
