Redemption Season

By Madeline Crowley

With just eight games under their belt so far, the Westmont High School softball team is already proving that this season could be a major success. After a challenging previous year, where they won only five out of 27 games, the new roster is determined to turn things around and get revenge against last season’s opponents. The team started strong in their scrimmage against Pioneer High School, scoring an impressive 15 runs to their 1. Junior Quinn Corbett hit the first home run of the season in this scrimmage, setting the tone for the team’s aggressive offense. In the annual Circle of Champions tournament in Salinas, the team finished with 2 wins and 2 losses. Their most notable performance came in a close 5-4 loss against Salinas High School, the defending CCS Division 1 champions. This hard fought game proved that Westmont has what it takes to compete with the top tier teams in their league. Additionally, this season, more than ever, carries deep emotional significance for the players following the recent passing of their beloved coach, Jim “Jefe” Marquez. While his loss deeply saddened the team, it has also given them extra motivation to honor his legacy. The day after Jefe’s passing, the girls took the field with determination and defeated Gunn High School,10-0, with no mercy. As the regular season continues, the team plays most games on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4:00 PM. For updates on schedules and game locations, make sure to follow their Instagram account!
