Thought Over Money

By Maya Bourne

These days, when in any kind of relationship with someone, whether it’s romantic or platonic, gift-giving is a large expectation. Birthdays, anniversaries, and other holidays mark important milestones in everyone’s lives, and we all hope for a good present to commemorate the occasion. Where people start to differ, though, is the kind of present they want, and there is really only one correct answer: thought. The only thing people really want is to be thought of. Whether it is a handmade card with a drawing on the front, a baked good, or even just a hand-picked Spotify playlist, the sentiment is all the same. I love poring over one project for hours on end, meticulously placing each sequin or scrap of paper to create a glue-covered masterpiece. Taking the time to make something for a loved one really elevates the present and leaves time during the process to think about that person and all the fun times you have shared together. You can personalize every present, adding in little inside jokes or funny quotes from friends to create a more meaningful gift.

I love a nice expensive gift. Hoodies are my absolute favorite piece of clothing, and I am always looking for fun new baking gadgets. Expensive and bought gifts can be thoughtful too, don’t get me wrong, and sometimes a good and thoughtful gift can be expensive. A new water bottle a loved one has been talking about for weeks; a guidebook of trails for a friend who loves hiking; a nice hand-mixer for someone who loves to bake. The gift really just has to show that you value and see the little things about that person, and for a gift like that, there is really nothing like a good hand-made gift. All of the little imperfections, pieces of glue stuck to the paper, and accidental fingerprints scattered throughout create a priceless gift that a loved one can cherish forever.
