We’re about 20 games into the NBA’s 2024-25 season, and things are already exciting. From big performances to unexpected stories, this season has a lot going on. Let’s hand out some early awards—both real and fun.
Most Valuable Player: Nikola Jokic
Nikola Jokic is proving why he’s the best. After winning a championship, he’s playing even better this season. He’s averaging a near triple-double—31.5 points, 13.3 rebounds, and 9.8 assists per game while shooting over 50% from three and running Denver’s offense.
The Nuggets aren’t the same without him, but when he’s on the court, they dominate. Jokic’s IQ, consistency, and ability to make teammates better put him ahead of everyone else. Jayson Tatum, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and Giannis Antetokounmpo deserve mentions, but Jokic leads the MVP race.
Defensive Player of the Year: Victor Wembanyama
Victor Wembanyama is already showing why he was such a big deal. He’s leading the league in blocks and making it hard for anyone to score near him. Players shoot only 45% at the rim when he’s defending. He’s not just a shot-blocker—he’s like a one-man defense.
Watching him play is amazing, and it’s hard to see anyone taking this award from him. Evan Mobley and Jaren Jackson Jr. are also strong defenders, but Wemby is on another level.
Rookie of the Year: Stephon Castle
He’s been key for the Spurs, playing smart defense, passing well, and making big plays. Even though his shooting isn’t great yet, he’s leading rookies in minutes and helping the Spurs surprise everyone this season.
Most Improved Player: Franz Wagner
Franz Wagner is stepping up for the Magic. With Paolo Banchero injured, Wagner has become their main guy. He’s playing great on both offense and defense, handling double-teams, and making clutch plays. His improvement in scoring and playmaking makes him the favorite for this award so far.
Sixth Man of the Year: Payton Pritchard
Payton Pritchard has been great off the bench for Boston. He’s scoring efficiently and taking advantage of his minutes. His 29-point game against the Bulls shows how valuable he is to the team.
Biggest Surprise: The Thunder’s Dominance
The Thunder are no longer just a fun, young team—they’re serious contenders. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is playing like an MVP, and the rest of the team has improved a lot. With Chet Holmgren adding defense and shooting, OKC looks ready to compete in the playoffs.
Most Confusing Team: Golden State Warriors
The Warriors are hard to figure out. Some nights, they look like championship favorites. Other times, they lose to teams they should beat. With lineup questions and an aging core, it’s unclear where they’re headed.
This season is already full of highlights, surprises, and standout performances. With so much going on, it’s shaping up to be an unforgettable year in the NBA.
