Tiktok Trends of the Year

By Mason Vargas

Throughout 2024 the world’s beloved Tiktok has brought many different trends that took over the internet at some point this year. So, why not relive some of these trends from 2024?

“Wait, they don’t love you like I love you”

This dance took the world by storm. I think I saw about 20 different people from my school alone recreate this trend. The dance is simple, typically sped up into a 2x video speed. Many big mascots participated like the iconic Duolingo Bird.

“Disco” by Surf Curse

Every year there’s one couple dance that nearly everyone participates in! This year that was to
“Disco” by Surf Curse. It wasn’t limited to couples though! Many friends did the TikTok and people got creative and did it to their favorite things like the refrigerator!

Jared McCain “Just Know Dance”

The Jared McCain “Just Know” dance is a viral TikTok trend where Jared McCain performed a smooth, swaggy dance to the song “Just Know” by Lil Yachty. The simple dance was also a smooth dance that one could even say was “nonchalant”.

Reddit Stories

I think everyone on TikTok had a Reddit story pop up on their for-you page at least once this year. The trend consisted of a Reddit story that was typically very dramatic, wild, or just funny voiced by text-to-speech voiceovers. Many times they resulted in a cliff hanger that would drag you into watching part 2.

Apple Dance by Charlie XCX

The Apple Dance, set to Charli XCX’s song “Apple,” was one of those TikTok trends you couldn’t escape this year. The dance was all about sleek, futuristic moves that perfectly matched the song’s edgy vibe. It felt like everyone was trying their hand at adding their own twist to the routine, making it a standout moment on the app.

Subtle Foreshadowing

I’m sure we’ve all seen the Subtle Foreshadowing trend on TikTok this year. It was all about creators showing a video, cutting to some dramatic ending, and then rewinding it and playing it again before cutting to the ending again. It was supposed to be “subtle,” but honestly, it was so over-the-top that it was kind of the opposite, and that’s what made it hilarious.

Candy Salad

You’ve probably come across the Candy Salad trend on social media at some point. The trend had people mixing a bunch of random candy into a salad bowl and calling it “candy salad.” It usually included everything from gummy worms to sour candy, and sometimes even chocolate. Many people would do this trend in their classrooms at school and I think everyone did it even if it wasn’t posted on social media.

Very Demure!

The “demure” trend on TikTok was all about people embracing a soft, elegant, and modest aesthetic. Many people taught this word to their older generation family members who were often so confused. The trend had people using “demure” in their daily vocabulary all over the world.

“We Listen and We Don’t Judge”

The “We Listen and We Don’t Judge” trend on TikTok was all about creating a safe, non-judgmental space where people could share funny or relatable thoughts, confessions, or experiences. Creators would usually start by saying, “We listen, and we don’t judge,” and then share something random or awkward, with the idea that the audience would just vibe with it and not judge.

“I’m Just a Chill Guy”

The Chill Guy named “My New Character” originated from people making jokes that he was a character in many cartoons and shows from the 2010s to the late 2000s. People began calling him a chill guy due to his iconic pose. People then began dressing like him or posed like him stating they’re a chill guy and remain calm despite a crazy situation unfolding before them.
