Survival Guide for Picky Eaters

By Cameron Kobara

If you’re anything like me when it comes to food, then you must know the struggle of being a picky eater—from constant judgment from peers when you dislike a certain food, to struggling to find a place to eat with friends when nobody can agree to anything due to the fact that YOU don’t like ANYTHING! However, over my 17 years of life, I have come up with the “Picky eaters survival guide” which can be shortened down to a very simple formula, a formula that consists of four crucial ingredients. Before we get into the actual rule book, allow me to explain for those who don’t know, a picky eater is someone with strong food-preferences who is also unwilling to try new food. Now, without further ado, let’s get into the survival guide!

THE SURVIVAL GUIDE

RULE 1: Stick to simple and familiar food

While this may go without saying, you should stick to the simple and familiar food that you love and that you’re used to… Sticking to the classic chicken tenders, pizza, and grilled cheese sandwiches could help you out with the other rules, so make a list of your favorite foods and keep that at hand.

RULE 2: Keep in mind customization options

Always keep in mind your ability of choice and free will, If you and your friends are unable to choose between restaurants, you could recommend buffets. Classic buffets like Golden Corral are a picky eaters dream; they have the classic pizza, and chicken, that all picky eaters love while at the same time have enough food options to satisfy your friends as well. Also, keep in mind restaurants such as Sizzler, that include a salad bar where you can pick and choose from a variety of sides such as, french fries, chicken, soup, and spaghetti.

RULE 3: Have a list of some GO-TO restaurants

This rule relates to rule one, so get your list of favorite foods and use that to make a list of some GO-TO restaurants that are safe options for you. Try to pick restaurants with simple but tasty food while trying not to keep the list centered around one type of food only.Include Chicken places, pizza places, burger joints, and other places that you can recommend to go to with friends just in case your friends aren’t particularly interested in a chicken or pizza place that day.

RULE 4: Don’t be afraid to ask for modifications

It should be common knowledge that most if not all modern restaurants allow you to modify your meals. You can take a DISGUSTING burger with pickles, and tomato and modify it to fit your wants and needs. However, if you’re too afraid to ask for these modifications and aren’t willing to risk some slight judgment (from the high school cashier who’s paid minimum wage) then you might as well starve!

The “picky eaters survival guide” is a sacred rule book that must be followed in order to help picky eaters. It involves tips and tricks that, if you’re a picky eater, you’ll definitely find some use for.Either way, it goes without saying, you can’t stick to the same things for the rest of your life… eventually you’ll have to step outside your comfort zone, and experience some change.
