Waddling into the spotlight of fame, Pesto the Penguin, a baby king penguin from Melbournes Sea Life Aquarim, recently went extremely viral on TikTok. Known for being adorably oversized, Pesto was born on January 20, 2024, and became famous as the largest ever recorded at the aquarium, weighing nearly 50 pounds at his peak. For comparison, most king penguins weigh around 21-38 pounds (ASOC). Thus, his fame rapidly grew as more and more fans from across the web learned about his infamous appearance.
Pesto’s rapid internet fame began with a few photos shared on Instagram showcasing his unusually large size. By July 2024, Pesto weighed 50 pounds–almost twice his foster parents’ weight. Although king penguins are known for their impressive stature, they are typically much smaller. Pesto’s impressive weight also comes with a large appetite. Devouring his meals, Pesto eats approximately 32 fish a day across all 4 of his meals to satisfy his hunger. In addition, since he is a chick, he still has lots of fluffy feathers, making him appear even cuter to fans because who wouldn’t want to watch a gargantuan fluffy penguin waddle around his enclosure?
The Sea Life Melbourne Aquarium first shared Pesto on Instagram and he instantly gained thousands of fans online. However, Pesto’s “gender reveal” clip shared by Sea Life on Tiktok was what first capitulated his stardom and brought in fans from around the world. From that point, Pesto’s videos regularly accumulated millions of views online as he charmed viewers with his fluffy, oversized appearance and very endearing behavior. Thus, Sea Life continues to post more clips and photos to their social media platforms which engage more viewers as they now watch Pesto grow older. One of his most popular nicknames is “absolute unit” thanks to his growing massive size and appetite. Fans continue to request to see more videos of him to keep up-to-date with his more recent transformations. For example, recently Pesto has begun to shed his baby feathers, leaving him with a very scraggily yet still adorable look. Soon, Pesto will transform into an adult and grow into a mighty king penguin.
