Chiefs “Kingdom”

By Cameron Kobara

The Kansas City Chiefs are one of the NFL’s oldest franchises, seeing its creation in 1960 and winning their first Super Bowl in 1969 in Super Bowl III. After their first Super Bowl victory, the Chiefs didn’t see another Superbowl until 2020, and fast forward to 2024, the Kansas City Chiefs have won three Super Bowls in the last five years. It’s clear that Kansas City is setting up their “kingdom” within the NFL as their new dynasty emerges with prominent figures at the helm such as Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, backed by some of the greatest coaches in the NFL, Andy Reid, and Steve Spagnuolo.

In the last two years, the Chiefs have won back-to-back super bowls, once in 2023 against the Philadelphia Eagles and once in 2024 against the San Francisco 49ers. This makes the Chiefs the first team to win consecutive Super Bowls since the Patriots dynasty in 2003-2004. Their Super Bowl win streak and their current 9-1 record begs the question, will the Kansas City Chiefs make NFL history by being the first team to win three Super Bowls in a row?

Some may wonder with the beginning of a new dynasty, what does this mean for the rest of the NFL? Well with the Chiefs winning three Super Bowls in the last five years, it’s obvious that they can be compared to the Patriots dynasty that ravaged the NFL throughout the 2000s, and 2010s, and with the Chiefs on a Super Bowl win streak it feels as if history is repeating itself.

The Chiefs got their second Super Bowl win against the San Francisco 49ers in 2020 after winning against Jimmy Garoppolo and company, beating the ferocious team by 11 points. The Chiefs would then go back to back but inevitably lose to Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2021. The Chiefs would miss the Super Bowl in 2022, but quickly bounced back with two straight Super Bowl wins against the Philadelphia Eagles and once again the San Francisco 49ers, solidifying their dynasty within the NFL. If no team is able to stop the Chiefs, they will go down as one of the greatest and most unstoppable teams in NFL history, key players such as Patrick Mahomes will also be compared to NFL greats such as Tom Brady, and the rest of the NFL would have once again wallow in fear of going up against the powerhouse that is the Kansas City Chiefs.

Despite the fact that the Chiefs have already gone to back-to-back Super Bowls, many ask what are their odds of doing it again.

As of week 11, the Chiefs are 9-1 after receiving their first loss against the Buffalo Bills, winning nine straight games beforehand. Despite their record, many point out the poor offensive performances from the team. Key players such as Patrick Mahomes have performed poorly, only having 15 passing touchdowns this season and limited to two in October alone. Mahomes has also struggled with throwing interceptions, throwing an average of one interception a game, Mahomes currently has 11 total interceptions. However, he is not the only offensive player on the Chiefs who has played poorly, star tight end, who many would call the best in the NFL, Travis Kelce has gone seven weeks with absolutely no touchdowns until game seven against the Las Vegas Raiders, who currently only has two touchdowns this season. Despite being the back-to-back Super Bowl champions who were once called the “best players in their position,” Kelce and Mahomes seem to be struggling this season, but if that’s the case, how is the team doing so well?

One word…defense.

The Chiefs’ defense is one of, if not, the best defensive scheme in the entire league, backed by one of the best defensive play callers in the NFL, Steve Spagnuolo. It seems that whenever teams go up against this defense, they aren’t able to put points on the board. With all that being said, do the Chiefs have another chance at a Super Bowl, or can the defense only carry the team on its backs for so long? Well with how things are going for the team so far this season, alongside their fairly easy schedule, it’s clear that the Chiefs could definitely become the number one seed in the playoffs, but by then they would have to go up against some actual competitors, such as the  8-2 Steelers and the 7-4 Texans. To sum it all up, the Chiefs have performed well this season as an undefeated team until week 11, mostly due to their elite defense. Despite their offensive struggles, their excellent defense and easy schedule going forward practically ensures them a high playoff spot, where they would then go up against some tough competitors, where the chiefs could be long overdue for a heartbreaking loss.
