College Focus: University of San Diego (USD)

By Amanda Bradshaw

Nestled in the heart of San Diego, USD is a private liberal arts university that specializes in providing students with a fulfilling, well rounded education. USD is decently selective, with an approximate acceptance rate of 47% in 2024. Overall, the University of San Diego fosters a fun learning environment for students, including a breathtaking campus along with several educational and recreational opportunities.

One of the unique aspects of USD is the strong relationship students have with the staff on campus. With an average class size of twenty one students, the typical college lecture hall teaching style is replaced with close professor-student interaction. Such an environment allows students to develop professional connections that can even lead to potential internship and job opportunities.

In addition to this, USD has further career help for students through the Career Help Center located on campus. Here, students can learn about career opportunities, work on their resumes, and even conduct mock job interviews. The services from the Career Help Center do not stop after graduation, and are open to all USD alumni in need of career guidance. This further contributes to the strong sense of community USD attendees feel, allowing students to excel both in and outside their years at USD.

Furthermore, USD has something for everyone, with over 180 student organizations and clubs. USD offers opportunities such as Associated Student Government, the Torero Program Board (that plans campus events), recreation services, and greek life. USD even includes living learning communities (LLC), that allow students to live with others that share their same academic interests. One of the most notable programs at the University of San Diego however is their study abroad program, with 83% of undergraduate students taking advantage of this opportunity. USD provides students with the unique opportunity to earn a double degree, one from USD and the other from the university they are studying abroad from. Most students utilize their intersession (extended winter break) as a time to start their study abroad journeys.

Finally, religion is a significant aspect of life in USD. Identifying as a religious institution, 39% of students are Catholic. The university has a church on campus, with optional mass students can choose to attend. Religious education credits are required for students, but are more open than simply offering Catholicism. Students have the opportunity to choose from a wide selection of courses including classes on Buddhism, Islam, Jewish faith, Indigenous religions, Faith & Politics, and even classes on the theology of Martin Luther King and Malcolm X. Overall, USD provides a safe environment for students of all religions, and supports each student on their personal faith journey, whatever it may be.

In conclusion, USD is a great institution that fosters a unique student-professor relationship, includes effort to help students careers, and provides unique opportunities for student involvement at USD. For more information on the University of San Diego go to https://www.sandiego.edu/
