Jewish Culture Club

By Jordan Kwong

Every other Friday, I walk into Mr. Graydon’s room, greeted by the warm smell of challah and the laughter of friends. Though I am Chinese-American and not Jewish, I’ve always felt that this club was for me too. In today’s high schools, clubs play an essential role in fostering communities and celebrating diversity. Among these initiatives lies an often overlooked club: the Jewish Culture Club. Founded in 2023, JCC at Westmont is a student-led organization that celebrates Jewish culture.

Jewish Culture Club is dedicated to exploring and sharing the rich culture. They not only connect Jewish students with their heritage, but also welcome people from all backgrounds to learn about and appreciate Jewish culture. The club aims to provide an inclusive environment where members can enjoy cultural activities and work together to increase cultural awareness. By highlighting the beauty of Jewish traditions and fostering open discussion, the club also helps break down barriers and promotes greater acceptance of diversity.

One of my favorite parts of Jewish Culture Club is its wide variety of educational and fun activities. The club frequently spotlights certain holidays or organizes cultural workshops where members are always engaged. Some of my favorite activities from last year include pipe-cleaner flower making during Tu Bishvet, popsicle stick house building during Sukkot, and dreidel playing during Hanukkah. Kahoots are also a staple activity, allowing for a competitive yet fun aspect of the meetings. In addition, Jewish Culture Club never fails to provide its members with delicious food. Bagels, grape juice, challah, apples, and hamantaschen are all examples of previously distributed treats, which resolved any sudden feelings of hunger.Overall, Jewish Culture Club serves as a vibrant oasis at Westmont, encouraging education, understanding, and celebration of Jewish culture. President Shelly Yoffe remarks, “it’s more than just a club – it’s a community where all are supported and welcomed.”
