In December of 2023, Simone Biles’ Husband (also known as Jonathan Owens) took part in an interview with The Pivot podcast. During this interview, a single sentence he said sparked massive discussion and ridicule across the internet. What exactly did he say, what was so horrible, that millions of people online came together to bash him? Well, he claimed that between him and Simone Biles, he was “the catch” in the relationship. Now, I can see why he said that since he is a somewhat famous football player, which probably gave him a massive ego (really, I aspire to be as delusional as he is). However, many people disagreed with him and came together to make fun of him and hate on him online. For good reason too (though they could have been a bit nicer about it), since Simone Biles is the most decorated female gymnast alive, with 11 Olympic medals, 7 of which are gold, and 2 gymnastic skills named after her. In a world of amazing gymnasts, she is one of a kind. In a world full of amazing football players, Jonathan is no Tom Brady. A few months after Jonathan’s much-needed humbling, the ridicule died down. However, now he is under fire again, and this time it’s not even really his fault! On July 21st, 2024, Jonathan posted a picture of himself and Simone, with the caption “Witnessing history every time you step on the mat. Congrats, baby, on becoming the most decorated American gymnast in Olympic history!!!! Just wow!!!! 8 of them!!!!! So thankful I was there to see it.” The only problem with this post was the fact that Jonathan was wearing Simone’s medal instead of her. Hordes of people online came forward to criticize Jonathan, many comments under the post saying “take her medal off”! However, on August 1st, Simone came forward to criticize the haters, saying “Crazy thing is, I put my medal on every single one of my family members and took pictures. So don’t ever make assumptions.” Clearly, this second scandal was no fault of Jonathan’s – it’s obvious he was only trying to support his wife! Now, in the wise words of Zendaya: “Um, yeah, kay, love you guys! Don’t forget to smile!”(mentioned picture of Simone and her Husband)
