The Best Songs to get into Taylor Swift (by a non-TS fan)

By Laura Lipcsei

DISCLAIMER: I, Laura Lipcsei, am not, and have never been a Swiftie. If you, a Swiftie, think that the songs I recommend are not Taylor’s best, they probably are not! I am not here to act like some kind of all knowing, crazy, Taylor fanatic, I am simply recommending songs I like, and think others would like.

As most people are aware, Taylor Swift is an extremely popular artist, known for her mainstream pop singles. However, she boasts a large variety of music, despite her most popular singles sounding roughly the same. Today, I will be recommending a couple of her songs, ones that (in my opinion) are more unique than her more known ones.

Honorable Mentions: “New Romantics”, “Cruel Summer”, “Getaway Car”, “Fortnight”

Although these songs (besides “Fortnight”) are some of her more mainstream ones, they are too good to exclude, and are some of my favorites of hers! (I added “Fortnight” because, for some reason, I get incredibly productive whenever I listen to it. Like, I actually lock-in on my homework and school work. I think it might have something to do with how boring the song is – I still absolutely love this song though, especially to nap to! It’s very relaxing.)

3. “Back to December”

I wanted to recommend this song, since it is one of the few where Taylor actually changes the tone of her voice throughout the song. By that I mean she doesn’t keep the same, constant, mellow voice throughout the song, as she tends to do in many of her newer songs. Don’t get me wrong, I still love a lot of her more recent songs, but I know it is easy to get tired of songs with no, or barely any, vocal fluctuation. This song is also a classic of hers, and many people may have heard it before, since this was one of her first songs to blow up (as far as I know at least). I remember hearing it on the radio when I was in elementary school, and I still love it to this day!

2. “Daylight”

This song has a very different vibe from many of her more popular songs and is more calming (in my very humble opinion). The song starts fairly slow, however about halfway through the song speeds up, and her vocals intensify. This slight change gives me the chills whenever I listen to it, and the raw emotion in the song greatly adds to the experience. If you like slower, emotion-filled songs, “Daylight” is the perfect match for you!

1. “Don’t Blame Me”

THIS SONG IS SO GOOD!!! Taylors vocals in “Don’t Blame Me” are heavenly. Like, I did not know she could ever sound like that before I listened to this song. Her vocals are incredibly intense and emotional, but in a more dramatic way than normal. Even more exciting, the instrumental is as intense as her singing, rather than her regular soft instrumental (in other words, her vocals and lyrics don’t carry the song). If you haven’t listened to this song yet, please do! And even if you have listened to it before, listen to it again, and bless your ears with a shockingly good Taylor Swift song.
