Gold for Saint Lucia

By Hailey Kearns
Julien Alfred, the 23-year-old sprinter from Saint Lucia, recently secured Saint Lucia’s first-ever gold medal in the women’s 1000m event during the Olympic games this past summer. Alfred’s remarkable achievement paves a new history for the small Caribbean island that is made up of just around 200,000 people. Her dedication, drive, and determination have led her to her astounding accomplishments. Competing for the University of Texas, she consistently climbed the ranks throughout her years in the 200m and 100m events and slowly became one of the best.

Her Olympics win represents Saint Lucia’s first-ever gold medal, and her performance is a testament to her unyielding work ethic and mental toughness. Running with exceptional speed, Alfred surged past her fellow competitors, like Sha’Carri Richardson and Melissa Jefferson, cementing her place among the world’s greatest sprinters. Overwhelmed by joy for Alfred, Saint Lucia recently declared they will honor her by making the 27th of September “Julien Alfred Day” (Saint Lucia declare “JULIEN ALFRED DAY” in honor of olympics women’s 100M champion Julien Alfred). Her historic achievement will heavily inspire future generations of athletes from Saint Lucia and the broader Caribbean, showing that even those from smaller countries can compete on the biggest global stages and reach victory.
