Listen A$AP!

By Jordan Kwong

After months of speculation and teasing, A$AP Rocky has finally dropped his newest single, “HIGHJACK.” Featuring singer Jessica Pratt, the standout song generates buzz ahead of Rocky’s upcoming album, Don’t Be Dumb. In the song, Rocky showcases his signature style by layering atmospheric vocals under penetrating lyrics sung by himself. Like many of his other songs, the song’s main message is simply to boast about the influence he has on the world. He mentions his 2011 single “Peso,” fashion icon Raf Simmons, and NBA star Scottie Pippen. All of these beautiful elements are typical and widely appreciated by Rocky’s fans.

However, the musical innovator does not stop there. Jessica Pratt, a Californian folk singer, wraps up the song with her smooth, flowy vocals. Although this isn’t typical of Rocky’s repertoire, his tendency to push the boundaries of hip hop doesn’t surprise fans and critics. It fits into the piece beautifully and the build up to it makes a voice like hers somewhat expected.

Some speculate that the piece also serves as a stab toward Drake. The piece’s common use of the lyrics “like that” may be referencing the groundbreaking diss track “Like That,” by Future, Metro Boomin, and Kendrick Lamar. Rocky also might be alluding to Drake’s rumored feelings toward Rihanna as he raps, “These n****s want my wife bad, the people want my next track.” Although Rocky’s intentions aren’t clear, the song somewhat reignites the hip hop world’s controversy against Drake from months ago.

In conclusion, A$AP Rocky’s latest single, “HIGHJACK” lives up to the hype. The track not only teases his upcoming album, Don’t Be Dumb, but also displays Rocky’s inventiveness within the hip hop genre. It seamlessly blends Rocky’s signature style with Jessica Pratt’s elegant vocals. He is able to honor his background while pushing limits, leaving both fans and critics captivated.
