Allez Français!

By Hailey Kearns

French class is truly one of a kind. For the past three years, I truly never know what I am getting myself into when I walk into the class. Although very unpredictable, I have grown to love Agnieszka Waclawek’s class. I have learned from my time in her class; here is my guide to making the most of your years taking French classes:

  1. Do not take notes unless told to do so:

If there is any advice that you should take from reading this guide, this one is by far the most important point. Whatever happens, do NOT take notes unless told to do so. You should not take notes when not instructed to because it will most likely not stick with you. Instead, listen to the lesson and then take notes to ensure proper understanding. Also, you do not want to find out the consequences of taking notes without being told to do so.

  1. Pay attention to the movies:

Movies! French movie days are by far the most enjoyable. Enjoy them! Although you will most likely not enjoy all of the movies, there are a handful of great movies that we watch. L’Ascension and Loving Vincent are by far the best movies I have watched during class.

  1. Put in effort:

French class is much more rewarding when you put in effort! Give your one-hundred percent because it will pay off.

  1. Go on the field trips:

I truly wish someone would have told me this sooner. French field trips are very fun. The last field trip the classes went on was to the Legion D’Honneur museum. Everything was so beautiful and I had such a great time exploring the city of San Francisco afterwards.

  1. Have fun:

Most importantly, have fun! Yes, there will be difficult days—like learning passé composé for the first time—but there will also be amazing days. Enjoy your time in French while you can because time goes by quicker than you think.
