Life in ‘06

By Diego Mantelli

Back when I was a wee lad, right outta the womb, 2006 was in full swing. Now, despite being one of the younger seniors at Westmont, 2006 was my jam. I was cruising around in the latest MacClaren stroller, chilling the back seat of my mom’s Tacoma, blaring “Hips Don’t Lie” and the latest Rihanna song. But for the uninformed, here’s what was big in 2006, who were the biggest winners, and most importantly, who made the most money.

Biggest Winners:

MLB- St. Louis Cardinals

NHL- Carolina Hurricanes

NBA- Miami Heat

NFL- Pittsburgh Steelers

Nobel Peace Prize- Muhammed Yunus

Oscar for Best Film – Crash

Single of the Year- “Bad Day” by Daniel Powter

Artist of the Year- Chris Brown

Biggest Headlines:

The Winter Olympics were held in Turin, Italy.

Israel and Lebanon entered conflict.

Montenegro declared independence from Serbia.

Italy won the 2006 world cup.

Twitter was launched.

The UN Humans Rights Council was established.

Saddam Hussein was executed for crimes against humanity.

The UK settled its World War II debt with the U.S.

Pluto was reclassified as a dwarf planet.

2006 was a long time ago, but for those who lived through it, it seems like yesterday.
