Why Bathrooms Should Not Be Patrolled

By Valerie Garcia-Vallejo

Restrooms are a place of privacy. Just how there are debates whether or not small children of the opposite gender displayed on a restroom door should be inside the restroom, there are also debates about whether restrooms should be patrolled in schools. Since bathrooms are a place in which there must be privacy, the answer is simple, no. Bathrooms should not be patrolled because privacy is essential. In schools, it is agreeable that some may not use their bathroom time wisely. Many use the restroom as a place to hangout. Just because some people choose to do this, does not mean that all people are this way. A restroom is a place in which one deserves the right of privacy. Using the restroom is not a privilege, it is a right. So, if the restroom is a right, the right of privacy is needed. If bathrooms were not a place where privacy is to be established, there would be no bathroom stalls. Since all bathrooms have stalls, then there must be privacy and there must be a privacy policy implemented. That means that just as students have the right to stalls, they have the right to use the restroom with no supervision of an adult.

Although many people take advantage of their right of privacy to use the bathroom, by any means, this does not mean that all people (even those who are not doing what they are supposed to), have to undergo being in the presence of someone monitoring their time in the restroom. Not only is this situation awkward, but it is wrong especially in schools. Children and teenagers must be given the respect, the privacy and the right of being able to use the bathroom without any worry. No matter how bad any bathroom situation may be at schools, nobody deserves to be put into an uncomfortable situation. The idea of having a person standing outside restroom stalls is unsettling. No one should have their restroom time monitored, nor should they be taken off their right to privacy when using the restroom.
