The Perfect Storm

Late on May 7, one of the strongest solar outbursts in 20 years began. Throughout the next few days, solar flares and CMEs–coronal mass ejections–pummeled Earth’s atmosphere, creating a long-lasting geomagnetic storm. According to NASA, eight of the flares from May 7-11 were X-class, the most powerful type, and one of the flares had a rating of X8.7– the most powerful seen during this solar cycle. Experts have even concluded that this most recent geomagnetic storm has been the strongest recorded since 2003.

Scientists were able to track the storm through the use of ground- and space-based telescopes tasked with detecting outbursts from the Sun, and they used this knowledge to prepare for possible complications created by geomagnetic disturbance. When CMEs travel toward Earth they interact with our magnetic field, causing many phenomena, including the spectacular aurora borealis. However, they also have the potential to interfere with satellites, GPS systems, and power grids. While the negative effects of the storm are difficult to gauge due to privacy concerns from companies and the sheer mass of land possibly affected, many experts, like Shawn Dawl of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Space Weather Prediction Center, view the experience as a “success story.” In the absence of large-scale disruptions, the geomagnetic storm brought positivity rather than fear to the world as its magnificent show of northern lights reached as far south as Florida. Americans flocked outside to view the once-in-a-lifetime phenomenon, which was easily captured by modern cell phone cameras made especially sensitive to the colors in the night sky. 

While the storm has slowed down as of May 16, 2024, there is a chance that the Sun is not done quite yet. Just like the Earth, the Sun revolves on its axis with a 27-day revolution cycle; no longer facing the Earth, the most active area of the Sun responsible for the solar flares does not pose a threat for at least a month, and may not be as active when it comes back around. However, the rotation does provide the potential of exposing other active spots on the Sun’s surface. According to Dr. Robyn Fiori of the Canadian Hazards Information Service, “the solar maximum is expected to peak sometime next year, and it’s already proving more robust than the previous solar maximum – which was itself on the weak side.” So, while we may have some time to wait, Americans may be able to see another aurora borealis from their homes once again!
