One of Westmont High School’s newest clubs—ROOTing For Earth—targets environmental change through agriculture, botany, and gardening. Working closely with the Westmont farm, RFE meets interchangeably in Room 46 and afterschool at the farm. Here is what the co-presidents of the club, Amanda Kappenman and Maria Edirisinghe, have to say about Earth Day. Amanda states, “Even though Earth Day is everyday, I love having a dedicated day to celebrate our special planet and spread awareness on sustainability.” Maria notes that “though I think the Earth should be celebrated everyday, I like that we have a solid day set in the calendar to not only recognize how much the Earth has done for us, but also why we must continue to protect it. Earth day reminds us of the achievements of the environmental movements so far—clean air acts, conservation groups, overall rising youth activism—and inspires us to continue advocating for a greener future.”
