How to Break Your Bones: Cheese Rolling

By Madeline Crowley

The award for a sport so strange you could barely even call it a sport, and so insane that you can hardly believe anyone participates in it, undeniably goes to cheese rolling. Every year in the little town of Gloucestershire in England, the tradition of cheese rolling takes place. At a spot called coopers hill this competition has been ongoing for over 2 centuries, generally happening in May. The hill, threatening in size and steepness, is the racecourse for this sport. When the competition starts, contestants send their round of cheese tumbling down the treacherous hill.  Obviously, gravity catches up and the cheese is zooming down this hill at unmatched speeds. The objective then is to get yourself caught up with the cheese as fast as possible and to cross the finish line at the bottom of the hill with it. The first person to get their cheese and themselves across in one piece is then deemed the winner of this silly sport! As one would assume, if the sport has been played for over two centuries, the competition gets quite heated and is taken seriously. Apparently there are several races which take place. Ones for men, women, and children! Watching the videos online of this morbid contest, my eyes were wide in amazement and in disbelief at what I was watching.  The players were ultimately sacrificing every limb of their body and injuring themselves every step, or shall I say every fall, of the way. Surprisingly though, many of the top athletes in the competition claim to have some sort of strategy and practice within this sport. Others had even traveled the world just to take part in it at the one unique hill. Overall, cheese rolling, whether you would consider it a sport or not, is the most insane activity one could participate in and the perfect way to break your bones!
