Women’s basketball has been at an all time high the past 2 years. In its growing popularity, many are excited to see how March Madness will play out. I am not much of an expert in women’s college basketball, but as an average viewer, here are some of my thoughts for this season’s March Madness tournament.
Iowa vs. LSU Rematch
After LSU’s outstanding win last season, the audience is apprehensive for a rematch between these two dominant teams. This season, LSU was 13-3 in their conference while Iowa was 15-3. Both teams have many new assets. Caitlin Clark, who has recently become the highest scoring player in both men’s and women’s college basketball, is likely eyeing a rematch against the Tigers, hoping to take the title. On the other hand, LSU acquired Hailey Van Lith, a senior guard averaging 12.3 ppg, in the fall. No matter the outcome, if these two teams play against each other, the game is sure to be exciting.
Stanford
Last season, Stanford was knocked out early in the second round of the tournament. As a Stanford fan myself, I was disappointed by the lack of rebounding the team achieved, who instead opted to rely on their post players. In the end, it didn’t work out for them because they lost 54-49 against Ole Miss. This year however, the team has become much more well-rounded. Led by Cameron Brink and Kiki Iriafen, who lead the team in scoring, Stanford came first in the Pac-12 conference with a record of 15-3. This year I hope the Cardinals are able to use their size and quickness to battle on the court.
Paige Bueckers Is Back!
After missing all of last season at UConn due to a knee injury, Bueckers is back for her fourth year playing basketball. Last year, the Huskies made it to the Sweet Sixteen, but lost to Ohio State 73-61. With their star player back on the court, I believe the team has an even better shot at advancing through the tournament.
South Carolina
Coached by Dawn Staley, the Gamecocks have had an undefeated season once again. Last season, South Carolina lost in the Final Four against Iowa. After the four point loss, the Gamecocks aim to extend their postseason and win the national title.
Juju Watkins is a beast
I don’t know much about SoCal teams, but from what I’ve seen and heard, Watkins runs the court. Hearing my sister talk about the 51 points she scored against Stanford, I just couldn’t quite believe that someone could make that many baskets. I’m not sure how the rest of the team is, but I am excited to see how the freshman integrates into the team and hopefully pushes them closer to victory.
I hope you all are ready for March Madness, because I know I’ll be on the edge of my seat watching the tournament play out!
