It’s fair to say that most people had a musical phase in their lifetime—specifically a Hamilton phase. Every time a catchy rap from the Broadway musical has been played in a room, the majority of people begin to sing the lyrics, whether they intend to or not. Lin-Manuel Miranda (creator of the hit show), crafted a masterpiece with his catchy lyrics, fast-paced tempo, and brilliant production. Although there isn’t a song on the Hamilton soundtrack that I’d skip, there are a few which I personally enjoy more than the others. I’ve created a list of my top 5 favorite songs from Hamilton (in no particular order), and why they stand superior in my eyes.
- “Non-Stop”
All 6 minutes and 25 seconds of “Non-Stop” are perfect, I could listen to this song for hours and find absolutely no errors. As the final track of the first half of the show, it’s guaranteed to be made with the purpose of leaving an impression. “Non-Stop” is composed with sections of quick beats, rapping, and harmonies while depicting Alexander Hamilton’s exceedingly busy and self-centered life. “Non-Stop” is not only in my top 5 for my overall enjoyment of the music, but also summarizes Hamilton’s relentlessness in the most impactful way.
- “The Room Where It Happens”
Where do I even begin with the talent which Leslie Odom Jr. possesses. His passion in this song is simply off the charts, and his portrayal of Burr’s political ambitions can literally be heard through the screen. The clever lyrics and musical composition of this song puts it on a completely different level. The catchy blend of jazz and hip hop flows so well, especially with the vocals of Leslie Odom Jr., making “The Room Where It Happens” a top tier track.
- “Satisfied”
Renée Elise Goldsberry combines her rapping skills and Broadway vocals to create the absolute masterpiece which is “Satisfied”. Goldsberry captivates the audience with her charisma and on-stage confidence. Technically and lyrically, “Satisfied” remains one of the most difficult songs to perform from the Hamilton soundtrack. The fiery, interchanging tempo, and heartbreaking storytelling of “Satisfied” puts it in the hearts of many.
- “Wait for It”
“Wait for It” is my personal favorite from Hamilton. It contrasts so drastically from the style of other songs on the album, and the vocals of Leslie Odom Jr. are simply outstanding. “Wait for It” reveals another view of Aaron Burr (who’s presented as the show’s villain) and rather displays him as a tragic hero. This beautifully complex song is executed perfectly. From the thought-provoking lyrics to Odom Jr’s emotional range, “Wait for It” never ceases to amaze me and is always on repeat.
- “Alexander Hamilton”
Of course, as the first song on the track, “Alexander Hamilton” has to be in the top 5 of Hamilton songs. It introduces the show in arguably the best opener of any Broadway musical. “Alexander Hamilton” sets up the musical in the most perfect way by laying out his past, reputation, goals, and relationships. All the leads sing a portion of the song, communicating their relationship with Hamilton and how he impacted them. The harmony, passion, and foreshadowing displayed in “Alexander Hamilton” creates the perfect ambiance to entail what the rest of the show will offer.
