Commonly heard saying “Buenos noches clase!” or talking about his kids, Andrew Narva lights up our school. With his groovy Spanish music to welcome his students to class as they walk in, he makes sure everyone is ready to learn. In this very exclusive interview with Señor himself, we will learn about his journey to becoming a teacher at none other than Westmont High School.
Where did you go to high school?
“Archbishop Mitty High School.”
What was your school’s mascot?
“The monarch, as in royalty.”
When did you graduate?
“Class of 2002.”
What was your favorite class in high school and why?
“My favorite classes were Spanish 3 and Earth Science. They were my favorite because I had an awesome Spanish teacher that helped me feel confident, and Earth Science was just a very fun class. “
What was your most challenging class and why?
“Chemistry Honors because I had to study a lot and there was a lot of information to remember.”
What extracurricular activities were you involved in?
“I played one season of badminton.”
Who were your favorite bands/artists/songs while in high school?
“Back then I’d say Metallica, The Doors, Primus, Funkadelic, Cypress Hill, Pink Floyd, Pantera, and Black Sabbath.”
What was your favorite tv show in high school?
“Seinfeld and Dexter’s Laboratory.”
What was your favorite novel?
“The Pearl by Steinbeck.”
What was your favorite movie while in high school?
“The Big Lebowski.”
What are your favorite memories of high school?
“Making varsity in badminton, sitting in mass with my brother while cracking jokes and not paying attention, when my brother got his driver’s license, and listening/watching my Spanish teachers puppet shows.”
What is your least favorite memory of high school?
“Probably my first week of freshman year because I didn’t know anybody since I came from public school while everyone else came from private schools.”
What was your gpa?
“3.9.”
Did you receive any awards?
“I was offered several partial scholarships but not any at school.”
How did you get to school (if you drove, what kind of car)?
“1989 Jeep Cherokee.”
How did you know you wanted to be a teacher?
“When I was in high school I worked during the summer as a teachers aid in a summer program and I had a really good experience. It was a program mostly for students who were still learning English and the teacher was very encouraging towards me as well. I also worked as an AVID tutor at a school and after that I realized I actually wanted to go back to school to get my teaching credentials.”
What is your best memory from all of your life?
“Meeting Señor Parks on my first day as a Westmont employee.”
Where is your favorite place you’ve ever been?
“Punta Cabras, Baja California, México.”
