“our” first evening star

By Keira De Vita

New and safe.

New and loved.

New and praised.

New and innocent.

You exist in new coats

You exist in shiny car seats

Adorn in pink, you turn each head down the streets

You exist in a state of serenity

Sprinkled with this

The beauty of Cassiopeia

Sprinkled with that

The innocence of Astraea

Rooms welcome you

They wait, ready for you. Longing for your return

You exist in photos

You exist in weekend recaps

You exist as perfect— your parents agree

You exist because of them

You exist everywhere but with me

Living in a state of oblivion

Living in the world through your growing eyes

They discover new things

Living in a world where pinching your finger is

Living in the worst.

You have not grown into this wicked world

You have not adapted to this ruthless planet

For that you are lucky

And for that, I am forever in admiration of you

And a bit jealous

I wait for the moment

When the stars align

I wait to know you

When you can become more than the upstairs cry
