China and The Philippines: Standoff at Sea

By Maxime Pocat

A maritime standoff between Chinese and Philippine ships in the South China Sea could lead to US involvement. Many people could read this headline and fear that America will intervene and aid the Philippines. However, this is not likely due to America having to keep peaceful international relations with China.

When Philippine boats were attempting to bring supplies to the Sierra Madre, a ship in deteriorating condition, the Chinese coast guard attempted to stop them. During the encounter, the Coast Guard even used a water cannon to severely damage one of the Philippine engines. This has gravely endangered the lives of their crew. Luckily, no injuries have been reported; however, casualties are possible if things continue to escalate. Due to a treaty between South Korea, Japan, the US, and the Philippines, any casualties could lead to US intervention. Although not likely, it may be possible.

China’s foreign ministry has told Washington that “no third party has the right to intervene”. If this is held up, then there will be no US intervention and hopefully, no casualties on either side, diminishing the threat of war between two military superpowers.
