As a student, Emma De Vita has been taking art classes for six years and guitar lessons for over two months. Growing up with the opportunity to take art classes she has grown into quite the drawer. Embarking upon her junior year of high school, Emma has been working on improving her art in and outside of school. Although AP U.S. History notes consume her day, she catches a break by strumming cords or painting the occasional summer mountain scenery. Emma practices until she makes something perfect. I interviewed Emma to gain insight into her experience with art endeavors throughout the years.
What types of art do you enjoy producing?
I love drawing, painting, and practicing guitar. Additionally, I enjoy making homemade jewelry.
How does Westmont aid your artistic ability?
Westmont’s art classes (art 1 and art 2) have helped me mold my skills into what they are now and have helped me gain a better understanding of how to work with specific 2D mediums.
What is your favorite 2D art medium?
Pencil and colored pencil.
Have you ever won an award for any artistic achievements or been recognized?
Technically. One of my pieces (a still life pencil drawing) was in the Westmont Art Show last school year.”
Artistic inspirations? And for which type of art?
I admire Banksy’s expression through his art [he is a street artist who does murals].
Emma points there is a level of humility residing in his art due to the fact he remains anonymous. “I draw my musical inspirations from Taylor Swift and Hozier.” She adds that she is inspired by their passionate lyricism as well as their ability to timelessly storytell.
