Longer the Lashes, Bigger the Lie

By Sinchana Holla

Influencers focus on governing audiences’ decisions, no matter the tactic. One such influencer, beauty guru Mikayla Noguiera, attempted this through trickery and lies. Prior to her scandal, she had risen to fame through reviewing beauty products with her positive reviews going viral. In January, Noguiera posted a TikTok video, reviewing the L’Oréal Telescopic Lift mascara.

She applied the product to one eye and said, “This literally just changed my life. This looks like false lashes, how, what?”

Then, she told the camera she would be back after adding “a second coat”.

After coming back on camera, her lashes looked noticeably longer.

“Look at the length,” she said. “I am speechless. I’m not sure anyone is ever going to be able to compete with this mascara.”

Seconds after she posted the video, fans quickly noticed her lashes and questioned her, asking, “did she just use fake eyelashes?”

One response garnered the most attention: a video from Jeffree Star. He posted a TikTok video reviewing the same mascara. Star noted that the product “was cute” and “looked pretty,” it wasn’t the “greatest” mascara. He concluded the video by warning viewers not to be “influenced so easily” by content creators and to “be careful”.

Following this, Noguiera went silent on social media for a week before returning to an audience of betrayed fans.

Although her controversy permanently stained her career, at least, her lashes looked great through it all!
