Trader Joe’s Taste Test : Autumn Edition

By Sinchana Holla and Amanda Schwarz

The arrival of fall marks the return of Tj’s seasonal sensations. Pumpkin flavorings and fall spices sneak into every corner, leaving an array of interesting treats to taste. Sinchana Holla and I took up the opportunity to sample and rate some of these delectable (and some rather appalling) fall specials.

We began with the ever-sought out Butternut Squash Mac and Cheese. The mac, coming in at only $3.79 per box, can be found in the frozen aisle among the other pizzas and pastas. Though the box advertises two servings (two side dishes), it makes the perfect single serve dinner. A quick five minutes in the microwave and a good stir is all it takes to enjoy the autumn enhanced twist of a traditional classic.

Butternut Squash Mac and Cheese

Sinchana’s Rating: 10/10

Amanda’s Rating: 10/10

Though I originally questioned what the butternut squash would do to a dish I usually like, I was pleasantly surprised to find it delicious. Sinchana and I both agreed it was exceptional, and well deserving of a perfect score on our rating scale. While Sinchana complimented the balance of the squash and the several cheeses, I immensely enjoyed the sharp bite of pepper. We both agreed it was a lovely texture, especially considering the standard expectations of frozen dinners. This creamy fall delight should be an instant item on any pasta lover’s grocery list.

As fall season approaches, the “fall aesthetic” takes over as people crave a warm cup of tea by their side at all times. At just $2.49, one receives 20 bags of Herbal Tea. With ingredients ranging from cinnamon to orange peels, the tea promises a “season’s-worth of experiences in a sip.”

Herbal Blend Harvest Tea

Sinchana’s Rating: 2/10

Amanda’s Rating: 2/10

Tea has continuously proven to be my comfort drink. When I saw the Herbal Blend Harvest Tea, I felt compelled to buy the potentially amazing brew. Yes, my expectations were high as I anticipated the drink to taste like fall in a cup. However, after my first sip, I felt betrayed. While I explain the taste as drinking melted candle wax, Amanda stated that the tea tasted like a pile of dead leaves (not that she knows how that tastes). The spices were severely unbalanced and left an unpleasant bitter taste in my mouth. In the nicest way possible, Trader Joe’s must eradicate the Herbal Blend Harvest Tea from their shelves and replace it with a tea that actually presents fall in a cup.

After the severe disappointment of the tea, we were eager to try the next treat on our list. While Trader Joe’s Chocolate Mousse Pumpkins lack fall flavors, they make it up in fall style. As their name suggests, the set of six little treats comes in the shape of vibrant pumpkins. Priced at $3.29 per package, the treat is made up of chocolate cake and chocolate mousse stacked and then covered in a colored outer layer.

Sinchana’s Rating: 9.5/10

Amanda’s Rating: 9.5/10

As chocolate lovers, we were not surprised to enjoy these festive treats. The cake is rich and  moist which pairs perfectly with the wonderfully sweet and smooth mousse. I deducted a bit due to the fact it was almost too sweet and I would not enjoy eating many at once. However, they make the perfect treat to share. Sinchana, opposingly, was thrilled that they were not too sweet at all. Debate over sweetness aside, we both recommend picking up the positively pleasant pumpkins.

Although the fall months get colder, ice cream stays in the freezer year-round. With an almost unbelievable smooth texture, the Maple Ice Cream is easily scoopable. At $3.79 a pint, the ice cream is made with real maple syrup and balanced with a sprinkle of sea salt.

Sinchana’s Rating: 9/10

Amanda’s Rating: 6.5/10

When Amanda scooped the ice cream for me, I already knew this would be a banger. The ice cream was smooth and creamy, ready for me to devour. The dessert exceeded my expectations as it delivered a rich balanced taste. Although Amanda critiqued the immense sweetness of the ice cream, I, conversely, felt that the sweetness was well balanced. However, as Amanda pointed out, the ice cream melted way too quickly and became soupy.  The ice cream had a strong maple flavor that really screamed, “fall!”. Amanda and I both agreed that the ice cream would go exceptionally well with other fall desserts such as pumpkin pie. Undoubtedly, this sweet delight must be added to anyone’s dessert menu.

Overall, Trader Joe’s provides the perfect place to shop seasonal fall specials. The foods we taste tested are only a fraction of the multitude of fall inspired foods in the store. What are you waiting for? Trader Joe’s is calling you to fall in love with their fall items.
